Privacy policy
ChemServer stores what it needs to run your account and your jobs and nothing more. No advertising, no analytics and no selling of data. Last updated 06-11-2026.
What we store
- Account details. Your email address, username and password. The password is kept only as a scrypt hash, so nobody at ChemServer can read it.
- Your files and results. Proteins, ligands and other files you upload, and the results of your runs. They sit in your own account folder and are not shared or published.
- Job records. The type of each job, its settings, its status and its times, so that your results page and queue position can be shown.
- Sign in sessions. A random token (stored as a hash) and its expiry date, so that you stay signed in.
- Messages. Emails you send us and requests you make from your account.
Reading the public website needs no account. The web server does not write access logs of page visits.
Cookies
ChemServer sets one cookie, a login cookie that is created when you sign in. It is sent only over HTTPS, lasts up to 7 days and is removed when you sign out. There are no advertising cookies and no tracking cookies.
Other services involved
- Compute servers. The files of a job are sent over an encrypted connection to the compute server that runs it, and the results are copied back to your account.
- 3D viewers. The viewer scripts (3Dmol.js) are downloaded by your browser from the cdnjs service of Cloudflare, which therefore sees your IP address when a viewer opens.
- RCSB Protein Data Bank. When you load a structure by its PDB ID, our server fetches it from RCSB.
- Email. Messages to chris@chemserver.online are handled by our email provider.
How long we keep things
- Run results are deleted 90 days after the run.
- Files you save to Home in My Files stay until you delete them.
- Account details stay until you ask us to delete the account.
- Server backups are made every night and the newest seven are kept, so deleted data can remain in a backup for about a week.
Your choices
You can delete any file in My Files yourself. To see, correct or delete your account and everything stored with it, email chris@chemserver.online from your registered address. Deletion requests are normally handled within a week.
Security
ChemServer is served over HTTPS, passwords are hashed and every account has its own folder. No system is perfectly secure, so please do not upload data that you are not allowed to share, such as patient data. If you find a security problem, please write to us before you publish it.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. Questions about it go to chris@chemserver.online.
